Our program today was Jennifer Woodard with the March of Dimes, and our own Mike Weber telling us about the up coming Tight Lies Golf Tournament which benefits the March of Dimes. Joe Alcorta’s outstanding summary of each of our meetings appears on our club website. Thanks, Joe.
Program for Aug. 18: Okie Okerstrone with the Abilene State Park.
Today, your Board of Directors approved the purchase of TWENTY TICKETS to the dinner on Aug. 29, 2006, at 7 p.m. honoring OUR OWN BOB HUNTER. These tickets will be GIVEN AWAY to the first twenty people who sign up at our meeting on Friday, Aug. 18.
The Board also voted to donate $300.00 to RYLA IN RUSSIA. You will recall that our District’s Group Study Eschange went to Russia, and they recommended this project. Your Board also voted to donate $500.00 to a project sponsored by our District for a SANITATION/WATER program in HONDURAS. Our club is truly part of a WORLDWIDE HUMANITARIAN ORGANIZATION.
Our ROTARY GOLF TOURNAMENT is tentatively set for Monday, Oct. 1. Please mark your calendar and plan on joining other club members for a fun time.
ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK: BRUCE BIXBY joined the Abilene Rotary Club on April 24, 1987. He graduated from Eagle Pass High School and Angelo State University. He is married to Debbie and has two daughters. His classification is "DEVELOPER." Bruce laid the groundwork for the GREAT WESTERN TRAIL marker which is in front of Frontier Texas.
A STRONG POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE WILL CREATE MORE MIRACLES THAN ANY WONDER DRUG—Patricia Neal
Rotary is based on the classification system, which means that we want members from all employments and professions. This week’s featured classification is MUSICIAN/SINGER. Bring someone involved in music or singing to our next meeting and you and your guest will each receive a FREE MEAL. The first step in proposing a new member is to BE SURE that the person knows what Rotary is. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE ROTARY in a conversation with a prospective member?
Many of our members have said that they will gladly help with introducing guests, giving the invocation, being greeters at the front door, and leading the singing. The following members have volunteered to chair these committees. Please say "YES" when they ask you for help: GREETERS—Derrel Reed, DEALING FOR DOLLARS—Frank Dlugas, INVOCATION—Malcolm Coco, REGISTRATION—Will Dix, INTRODUCTION OF GUESTS—Mike Schweikhard, and SINGING—Bob Kuykendall.
WHY JOIN ROTARY? ENTERTAINMENT. Every Rotary Club and district has parties and activities that provide diversion in one’s business life. Rotary holds conferences, conventions, assemblies, and institutes that provide entertainment in addition to Rotary information, education, and service.
MAKE-UPS: Tom Boecking, Tim Doty, and Jay Hobbs at Abilene Southwest Rotary this week. Bob Hunter, Peter Fox, and Mike Schweikhard have made up recently at the Sweetwater Rotary Club, and Bob Hunter made up at the Capitol of Texas Rotary Club in Austin.
Club Officers: Mike Weber, President; Bob Test, President Elect; Mary Beth Kilgore, Secretary-Treasurer; Directors: Frank Dlugas, Kim Bosher, Jay Hobbs, Erik Johnson, Bruce Lampert, Randy Piersall; Sergeant at Arms, Marty Pothier, Will Dix, Assistant Sergeant at Arms, and Peter Fox (immediate past president).
