Today, Richard Sowell, cowboy poet, entertained us. Joe Alcorta’s outstanding summary of each of our meetings appears on our club website. Thanks, Joe.

Program for NEXT WEEK: District Governor DAVE MASON will update us about Rotary International and about our Rotary District.

In ROTARY, August is MEMBERSHIP MONTH. We are scheduled to introduce two new members next week. New members are essential to our club. Let’s make August an even better month for bringing in new members than July has been. BRING A PROSPECTIVE MEMBER TO ROTARY.

Erik Johnson is working on one of our newest projects. We hope to build a Rotary DISC GOLF COURSE in a new city park near Lake Kirby. This will be a championship disc golf course that should attract visitors and tournaments to our city.

Our club BOARD OF DIRECTORS will meet next Friday at 1 PM. One item on the agenda will be the annual ROTARY GOLF TOURNAMENT. Let President Bob or David Stubbeman know if you can help with this money-raiser for our Community Service projects. And plans for next year’s TASTE OF ABILENE have already begun.

There is still time to make plans to attend the Rotary District Membership and Foundation Seminar on Saturday, Aug. 11. In attendance will probably be one of the newest members of the ROTARY INTERNATIONAL BOARD OF DIRECTORS, DON MEBUS, from the Arlington, Texas, Rotary Club. Don is from our district and he is known to many of you because he attended our district conferences when they were held in Abilene.

As an international organization, Rotary offers each member unique opportunities and responsibilities. Although each Rotarian has first responsibility to uphold the obligations of citizenship of his or her own country, membership in Rotary enables Rotarians to take a somewhat different view of international affairs. Recently, our club has helped drill water wells in Honduras and in Lagos, Nigeria. We are working on a project to drill water wells in Zambia. Clean drinking water is not found in many areas of the world and WE CAN HELP. Our club has recently help sponsor an eye clinic in India.

ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK: BILL (DOC) ROBERSON. Bill graduated from Pecos High School and Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine. He joined our club in November 1946. Bill is a Paul Harris Fellow. He has perfect attendance at our club for many, many years, and is one the first persons to arrive at Briarstone every week for our meetings. He is retired and is a newly-wed.

MAKE-UPS: Richard Rolison on line at E-One Rotary Club, Bruce Lampert, and Turner Cariker at Abilene Wednesday Rotary; Mike Weber, Marty Pothier, Tom Boecking, and Bob Hunter at Abilene Southwest.

Club Officers: Bob Test, President; Randy Piersall, President-Elect; Mary Beth Kilgore, Secretary-Treasurer; Directors: Kim Bosher, Kent Brown, Frank Dlugas, Woody Gilliland, Steve Glenn, and Jay Hobbs; Sergeant at Arms, Marty Pothier; Assistant Sergeant at Arms, Will Dix; and Mike Weber (immediate past president)
