Our program today was Nikki Mathur and Marlene Wyatt, the two Wylie High School students who attended Rotary Camp RYLA last month at Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. Also, we saw the van that OUR CLUB DONATED to Meals On Wheels Plus. Joe Alcorta’s outstanding summary of each of our meetings appears on our club website. Thanks, Joe.

Program for Aug. 4: DOUG WILLIAMSON, from the Abilene Reporter News.

ROTARIAN OF THE WEEK: JOE ALCORTA writes a summary each week of our Friday meetings. Joe has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Spanish and teaches at Hardin-Simmons University. He has been married to Liandra since Aug. 19, 1962. They have four children.

"EXPERIENCE is the name everyone gives to their mistakes."-Oscar Wilde

We need someone to volunteer to be on the Youth Exchange Committee. There is a young lady coming from Turkey and this is a great opportunity to be involved in International Service. Let David Stubbeman know if you will do this.

Rotary is based on the classification system, which means that we want members from all employments and professions. This week’s featured classification is ENTERTAINMENT AND SPORTS. Bring someone involved in Entertainment or Sports to our next meeting and you and your guest will each receive a FREE MEAL. The first step in proposing a new member is to BE SURE that the person knows what Rotary is. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE ROTARY in a conversation with a prospective member?

Many of our members have said that they will gladly help with introducing guests, giving the invocation, being greeters at the front door, and leading the singing. GREETERS FOR AUG. 4: CHARLIE KITCHELL, MARY BETH KILGORE, MIKE SCHWEIKHARD AND DERRAL REED. Please stand by the door into the Briarstone dining room and greet everyone who comes to our meeting next Friday.

WHY JOIN ROTARY? CONTINUING EDUCATION. Each week at Rotary there is a program designed to keep one informed about what is going on in the community, nation, and world. Each meeting provides an opportunity to listen to different speakers and a variety of timely topics. Rotarians have funded a water well in the village of Zormat, Afghanistan, providing clean water to the village. During 2004-2005 (the latest available figures) The Rotary Foundation received over $120 million in donations. After grants, etc., The Rotary Foundation had total assets of $602.9 million, as of June 30, 2005. In the last 50 years, Rotary has awarded approximately 30,000 scholarships, totaling $320 MILLION.
