The RotaryChuck Moser Award
The Rotary Chuck Moser Award Program was approved by the Rotary Club of Abilene in 1998 under the direction of then president Ted Paup. Thanks to the graciousness of Mrs. Chuck Moser (Doris), the club was authorized to establish the Award in Coach Moser's memory. The first Program was presented at the Rotary Club meeting of March 5, 1999. President Ted Paup called the meeting to order. An invocation was given by Rotarian Rick Womble then Rotarian Betty Hukill led the National Anthem. Emcee for the program was Bob Bartlett, KTAB-TV. Bob called on Dick Tarpley, former editor, Abilene Reporter-News, to give the history of Coach Chuck Moser. Following this, a video presentation of the Chuck Moser era was made by Rob Westman. Grady Barr, Board Chairman for the Community Foundation of Abilene announced the new Chuck & Doris Moser Scholarship Fund. U.S. Congressman Charles Stenholm and Texas State Representative (Rotarian) Bob Hunter made short presentations. Don Drennan, City Councilman (Rotarian) presented a Proclamation to Mrs. Doris Moser. President Ted Paup read letters from Dr. Ray Bowen, President Texas A&M University, R. C. Slocum, head football coach, Texas A&M University, U.S. Senator Kay Baily Hutchison and James Lacy, then President of Rotary International. Rufus King and Gerald Galbraith recognized "Chuck's Boys" in attendance. Presentation of the first Girl's Coach of the Year Award was made by Robert Starr, AISD Athletic Director, and Mrs. Doris Moser to Bev Ball, Abilene High School Swimming Coach. Presentation of the first Boy's Coach of the Year Award was made by Al Pickett, Sports Writer, Abilene Reporter-News, and Mrs. Doris Moser to Art Briles, Head Football Coach, Stephenville, Texas.
